The M2 metro runs from Taksim through Beyoğlu and beyond — critical for getting to/from Taksim Square. The Tünel funicular (1875, one of the world's oldest) connects Karaköy to the top of Galata in 90 seconds.

Ferries are both transport and sightseeing. The Eminönü–Kadıköy ferry (20 minutes) is one of the world's great commuter experiences — cheap, scenic, with tea service on board. The Kabataş–Üsküdar ferry provides another scenic cross-Bosphorus connection. The full Bosphorus ferry runs from Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı and back (6 hours round trip) — essentially a free sightseeing cruise for the price of a transit fare. Island ferries connect to the Princes' Islands from Kabataş (90 minutes). All ferries accept Istanbulkart.

Airport to Sultanahmet: Havaist bus → Sultanahmet. Or Metro M11 to city center + T1 tram. Sultanahmet to Eminönü (Bosphorus cruises): Walk 10 minutes downhill or T1 tram (1 stop). Taksim to Eminönü: Funicular down to Kabataş + T1 tram (15 minutes total). Any location to Kadıköy (Asian side): Ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy (20 minutes). Hotel to Grand Bazaar: T1 tram to Beyazıt or Çemberlitaş. Hotel to Dolmabahçe Palace: T1 tram to Kabataş + 5-minute walk.

Pro tip: Istanbul traffic is heavy — avoid surface transport (bus, taxi) during rush hours (07:30–09:30, 17:00–19:30). Use rail and ferry instead.

Always ensure the meter is running — the base fare starts at approximately 35 TL with per-kilometer charges added. Istanbul taxis are yellow and licensed; avoid unmarked cars offering rides. For a more predictable experience, BiTaksi is Turkey's ride-hailing app that works like Uber — you see the fare estimate before confirming and can pay by card through the app, eliminating meter disputes.

The app is available in English and is widely used by locals and tourists alike. For airport transfers, Istanbul has two airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side. From IST, the Havaist airport bus service runs to Taksim, Sultanahmet, and other key points for about 140 TL — far cheaper than the 400-700 TL taxi fare. Private airport transfer services offer door-to-door convenience for approximately 250-350 TL and can be pre-booked.
