The Princes' Islands (Adalar in Turkish) are an archipelago of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, lying 12–20 kilometers southeast of central Istanbul. Only four are regularly inhabited and open to visitors: Büyükada (the largest and most popular), Heybeliada, Burgazada, and Kınalıada. The islands have been a retreat from urban life since Byzantine times, when exiled princes and deposed emperors were banished here — hence the name. Today, the islands are famous for being completely car-free.
Transportation is by electric vehicles, bicycles, and the iconic horse-drawn carriages (fayton). Victorian-era wooden mansions, pine-forested hills, and turquoise waters create an atmosphere that feels worlds away from the bustling streets of Istanbul, yet the ferry ride takes just 75–90 minutes. The islands are home to about 10,000 permanent residents, but in summer the population swells to over 100,000 as Istanbulites escape the city heat.
